# CLI, ChatGPT, or Claude

> Compare the TPC CLI with the TPC plugin in ChatGPT and Claude, and pick the one that fits how you work.

You can work with The Prompting Company (TPC) outside the dashboard in two ways:

* **The CLI**: `tpc`, a binary you run in a terminal or a script.
* **The TPC plugin**: you ask an AI assistant in plain language, and it calls TPC for you. The plugin works in ChatGPT and in Claude.

The plugin is one server, the TPC MCP server at `https://mcp.promptingco.com/mcp`. ChatGPT and Claude connect to the same server, so they have the same tools and the same access. Only the install steps differ.

Both sign in with your TPC account, so you see the same organizations and products as in the dashboard, and the same plan limits apply.

## CLI or the TPC plugin

| | CLI | TPC plugin |
| - | - | - |
| How you use it | Typed commands in a terminal, a script, or CI | Questions in a chat with ChatGPT or Claude |
| Who decides which calls run | You | The assistant |
| Output | Tables, or JSON with `--format json` | A written answer, with a prompt list and analytics charts in clients that show them |
| Best for | Repeatable or bulk work, automation, and features only the CLI has | Asking questions and making changes without learning commands |

### What each one can do

| Feature | CLI | TPC plugin |
| - | - | - |
| Organizations and products | Yes | Yes |
| Tracked prompts and prompt suggestions | Yes | Yes |
| Topics and views | Yes | Yes |
| Tracked URLs | Yes | Yes |
| Site content: draft, generate, review, publish | Yes | Yes |
| Knowledge files | Yes | Yes |
| Analytics: share of voice, citations, sentiment, AI traffic | Yes | Yes |
| [Personas](/cli/commands/persona) | Yes | No |
| [Model council](/cli/commands/council) | Yes | No |
| [Simulations and Agent Experience](/cli/commands/agent-experience) | Yes | No |

For every tool the plugin can call, see [Connect the MCP server](/mcp/connect#tools).

**Use the TPC plugin** when you want answers without learning commands. Ask "How is my product doing in AEO?" and the assistant finds your product, runs the analytics calls, and summarizes the results. See [How is my product doing in AEO?](/mcp/check-aeo) and [Help me improve the AEO of my product](/mcp/improve-aeo).

**Use the CLI** when you need:

* The same steps every time, in a script, a cron job, or CI
* JSON output to feed into other tools
* Personas, Model council, or simulations and Agent Experience

You can use both. Coding agents such as Claude Code can also run `tpc` commands themselves.

## ChatGPT or Claude

Pick the assistant you already use. The TPC tools are the same in both.

| | ChatGPT | Claude |
| - | - | - |
| Where to get it | [The Prompting Company](https://chatgpt.com/plugins/plugin_asdk_app_6acd8fe391b48191a1d6e6237bbd52bf) in the ChatGPT plugin directory | A custom connector you add with the server URL |
| Works in | ChatGPT | Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and Claude Code |
| Sign in | TPC sign-in in your browser | TPC sign-in in your browser |
| Setup steps | [ChatGPT](/mcp/connect#chatgpt) | [Claude.ai and Claude Desktop](/mcp/connect#claude-ai-and-claude-desktop), [Claude Code](/mcp/connect#claude-code) |

Claude Code also suits engineering teams: a coding agent can read your analytics and update content and knowledge files while it works in your repository.

## Get started

> **[CLI](/cli/installation)**
>
> Install `tpc` and sign in.

> **[ChatGPT](/mcp/connect#chatgpt)**
>
> Connect the TPC plugin in ChatGPT.

> **[Claude](/mcp/connect#claude-ai-and-claude-desktop)**
>
> Add TPC as a custom connector in Claude.
